Abstract

1427711 Coated fabrics IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD 30 Jan 1973 [7 Feb 1972] 5490/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and D1] An autogeneously bonded non-woven fabric comprises an intimate blend of bonding and non-bonding fibres, all said bonding fibres having the same softening temperature, said fabric comprising a main body portion and surface layers on either side of said main body portion, at least one surface layer containing a higher proportion of bonding fibres than the main body portion, is coated with rubber. In the preparation of a coated fabric (example 1) 75 parts by weight polypropylene and 25 parts copolyamide (obtained by copolymerising 3 parts hexamethylene adipamide and 1 part #-caprolactam) are fed to each of eight extruding packs. Six packs each produce 40 polypropylene homogeneous continuous filaments and 42 polyproylene core copolyamide sheath continuous bicomponent filaments, the core sheath volume ratio being 60:40. The other two packs each produce 80 bicomponent filaments at a core; sheath volume of 80:20. The filaments extruded from each pack are quenched in air, drawn 2.67 times by knurled draw rolls, electrostatically charged and passed to an associated spray gun which traverses across an advancing wire mesh belt. The filaments separate from each other at the exit of each gun. The two packs delivering only bicomponent filaments feed to the last two guns and thus produce the upper surface layer of the web. The web is bonded by passage through a steam chamber having inlet and outlet seals each consisting of two inflatable air bags which also act to compact the web. The side of the web without additional bicomponent filaments was coated with a viscous solution of uncured natural rubber which was spread evenly with a doctor blade and the rubber cured.
