Abstract

1426786 Estimating the toxicity of industrial effluents BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 5 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 42876/73 Heading G1B A culture of an aerobic single cell microorganism is incubated anaerobically, with a liquid industrial effluent and water, then the rate of aerobic respiration of the cells is compared with that of cells which have not been so treated, as a measure of the toxicity of the effluent. Incubation may proceed for 15-180 minutes at 20-35‹C. Preferably 0À04-2À0 mg of cells per ml of effluent are used and the volume of the mixture is 2-20 ml, comprising 1-10 ml effluent. The micro- organism may be a veast. An example using Saccharomyces cereviseae gave a threshold toxicity for toluene of 200-350ppm: the toxicity of toluene for mosquito fish is 386-1180 ppm.
