Abstract
1422282 Magnetic bearings K BODEN W GROTH and D SCHEFFER 16 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 12709/73 Addition to 1257423 Heading G3R [Also in Division F2] The magnetic bearing assembly of Specification 1257423; in which the rotor 11, at least partly ferromagnetic, is stabilized radially by two sets of four windings 17, 18, in respective planes, controlled by two groups of four sensors, and controllers 20, 29; is modified in that there is provided, adjacent the permanent magnet 13, an annular coil 23 in a ferromagnetic member 22, control of the coil current, via controller 25 receiving signals from rotor axial displacement sensor 24 ensuring that rotor position is additionally stabilized in an axial direction. Controller 25 provides both gain and phase shift of the sensor signal to give clamping also in the axial direction. Axial stabilization may be provided at both ends of the rotor, with a single controller common to the magnetic arrangements at each end. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the coil 23 is replaced by four coils (17") 90 degrees apart in phase, all coils receiving a common current from controller (25) sensitive to rotor axial position sensor (24) for axial stabilization, the coils in addition receiving currents to produce a rotating magnetic field, from controller (19) sensitive to radial rotor position sensor (20), the coils thus acting also as the upper set of rotor radial stabilization coils.- The rotor axis may be vertical or otherwise. The sensors are capacitative, inductive, photo-electric, or galvanomagnetic. The magnetic circuit comprising components 22, 11 and air-gap 26 is arranged to have low reluctance. Axial stabilization may be provided by means co-operating with an internal wall of an at least partially hollow rotor encircling such means.
