Abstract
1421174 Corundum-based grains HERMANN C STARCK BERLIN 6 Dec 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 56358/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C4] A microcrystalline corundum-based abrasive grain having a high grain toughness comprises a polycrystalline matrix of which a polished ground section thereof reveals substantially no cracks or flaws through the polycrystalline matrix. The grain is obtained by rapid solidification of a molten abrasive followed by cooling of the solid abrasive formed that it delayed by release through the solidified abrasive of the heat of fusion of a molten material with which the rapidly solidified abrasive is in contact. The grain may be of pure alpha-aluminium oxide or alphaaluminium oxide with titanium oxide and/or chromium oxide and/or zirconium oxide. Preferably the melt is thermally insulated by a layer of alumina, coke breeze of an insulating material over the layer of molten abrasive. The heat storage material is preferably an iron alloy which can easily be removed by means of a magnetic separator.
