Abstract

1420641 Milling; gauging J A VILLANO 1 Jan 1973 82/73 Headings B3K and B3B [Also in Division G3] Involute or helical cams are produced by a milling machine by controlling motors, providing a rotary and an axial movement, from a linear interpolator programmed with start and finish co-ordinates. A screwed machine part to be produced on a Swiss-type screw machine is analysed in a programmed-computer to derive an appropriate profile for a cam to be used in the machine. The profile is prepared as a numerical control tape 36 for use in a milling machine 19. The tape, bearing digital data representing points on the cam, is read by a reader 36 and the derived signals fed to a linear interpolator 35 which co-relates rotary motion of the cam blank on a table, effected by a stepping motor 30, with a linear motion along an X axis by a stepping motor 26, through a reduction gear 27 or directly through a stepping motor 23 or 123. The selection of motor 26 or 23 is effected by a switch 41. It is stated that modification of the cam profile could be carried out by a Z axis slide but would involve circular interpolation. This is avoided by the use of a correcting cam 38, Fig. 1, directly acting on a spindle holder for the milling cutter.
