Abstract

1420340 Vehicle restraint cushions SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 17 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 2448/73 Addition to 1420226 Heading B7B An inflatable crash restraint bag 5 having inner and outer portions 11 and 10, in which, the outer portion is inflated from a pressurized gas source 2 and the inner portion is erected and filled with air during inflation of the outer portion and in which first and secondÀexhaust means for permitting expulsion of gas from the outer and inner chambers, respectively, are provided. The bag has inner and outer flexible walls 8 and 7 which are sealed together at points 9 to create interconnected spaced pockets. These pockets are connected to the gas diffuser 4 and together form the outer portion 10. Apertures 13 with inlet flap members 14 are provided at the sealed points 9 to allow air to enter the inner chamber. In a first embodiment, Figs. 1 and 4, an exhaust valve 18 for the outer chamber is provided in the gas inlet tube 3; and an exhaust orifice 15 controlled by a calibrated flap member 16 is provided in the inner chamber wall opposite the diffuser 4. When a vehicle occupant is thrown against the inflated bag, gas from the outer chamber displaces the valve member 23 against the action of a spring 26 which abuts an adjustable stop 25 and escapes to atmosphere. Following exhaustion of the outer chamber the orifice 15 is opened and gas from the inner chamber may escape through valve 18. A filter/dust cover 21, 28 is provided about the valve outlet. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the orifice 15 is not provided and the inner chamber is exhausted through small orifices (31) defined in the flap members 14 or in the bag walls, at the same time as the outer chamber exhaust through valve 18. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the valve 18 is not provided and the outer chamber is exhausted through relatively wide outlets (32) positioned in the gas inlet 3, whilst the inner chamber is exhausted either simultaneously through the bag orifices (31) (Fig. 7) or at a later stage through a calibrated valve, Fig. 6, in the bag opposite the diffuser 4. This valve includes a member 42 seated by a calibrated spring 43 which abuts an adjustable stop 44, 45. In a still further embodiment the outer chamber is exhausted through calibrated orifices positioned in the gas inlet 3, and the inner chamber is exhausted through the calibrated valve.
