Abstract

1414765 Identifying objects HONEYWELL INFORMATION SYSTEMS Inc 21 Jan 1974 [19 Jan 1973] 02835/74 Headings G4H and G4M The invention relates to the correlation of an identified bulk quantity with the analysis result of a test sample taken from that quantity, e.g. in a clinical chemistry laboratory. Random numbers x, y, z are associated with a patient 10, a sample container 15 and one or more subsample containers 23 respectively. On admission to hospital, the patient's personal details are entered into a memory 13 together with his allotted number x. The patient is given a wristband to which is attached a machinereadable label 12 bearing his number x; the label may be in the form of an apertured ring as in Fig. 3, and is of the same form as the labels 16, 24 attached to containers 15, 23. When a sample is taken from the patient, labels 12, 16 are read by a portable reader 17, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), and stored in a temporary memory 20, the numbers x, y being subsequently transferred to the memory 13. Container 15 is then taken to a transfer station 22 where the sample is distributed among subsample containers 24 and analysed 27, numbers y, z on labels 16, 24 being read and stored in memory 13. After analysis, the container label number z is stored with the results for that subsample. Logic 32 associated with memory 13 then operates to associate the patient data with his test results, both of which are printed out. Memory 13 and logic 32 may be part of the hospital computer, when the pairs of random numbers are stored by indirect addressing. Reader 17 contains magnetic cores whose flux linkage depends on whether an aperture is present or not in each bit location on the label. The transfer station 22 and analyser 27 may be automated, a description of suitable Honeywell equipment being provided with reference to Figs. 9-14 (not shown).
