Abstract

1410242 Resistance heating SHANDON SOUTHERN INSTRUMENTS Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 48671/72 Heading H5H In an atomic vapour source comprising a carbon rod resistance heating element 18 clamped between current suppling, upstanding metal pillars 11 which are clamped between and insulated from metal plates 13 which define with the pillars a chamber, the ends of the pillars 11 clamping the carbon rod 18 are free to move relative to one another to accommodate thermal expansion of the rod 18. The lower ends of the pillars 11 are fixed to an insulating cross bar 12 which is flexible to permit movement of the upper ends of the pillars 11. A bolt 14<1> clamps plates 13 intervening P.T.F.E. strips 14 and pillars 11 together to form the chamber. The pillars 11 have slits 17 communicating with horizontal bores which take the ends of carbon rod 18, screws 19 providing the necessary clamping pressure. The pillars have coolant passages 23 interconnected by a conduit 24. A mask 27 pivoted to side plates at 28 is adjustable against a biasing spring 35 to align one or other of its different sized apertures 30, 31 with apertures 32 in side plates 13. Inert gas, e.g. argon or nitrogen is introduced to the chamber, where it may be diffused by glass beads or a mesh arrangement, by a conduit 22. A vented cover 33 closes the chamber. Apertures 34 provided in the ends of pillars 11 permit atomic absorption measurements to be made along the direction of the rod 18 in addition to transversely of it. The carbon rod (Fig. 2) has a sample cavity 19<1>, which may be elongated (Fig. 3, not shown), between two undercut sections 20, which serve to concentrate heat around the cavity. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,312,970.
