Abstract

1408327 Plastics-coated substrates NITTO KASEI CO Ltd and NIPPON OILS & FATS CO Ltd 31 Jan 1973 4921/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] An anti-fouling film is formed on a substrate by applying to the substrate a copolymer comprising (a) recurring units of the general formula (Ia) or (Ib) wherein R is an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl or phenyl group; R' is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbyl group or a -SnR 3 " group, each of X, Y, A and B, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and R" is an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl or phenyl group; (b) recurring units derived from a compound of general formula (II) wherein R"' is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms or an aryl group and R"" is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and/or recurring units derived from a compound of general formula (III) wherein Q is a halogen atom or a -CN, group wherein R* is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, each of R** and R***, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and Q' is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and optionally (e) recurring units derived from a compound of general formula (IV) wherein each of P and P', which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms and containing only carbon and hydrogen atoms, the amount of the recurring units (c), when present, in the copolymer being up to 50 mol% of the total recurring units or a composition comprising such a copolymer dissolved in an organic solvent. In the Examples steel plates under coated with a vinyl type anti-corrosion primer and fishing net baskets made of polyethylene yarn are coated by dipping. Ship's bottoms made of metal, wood or fibre-reinforced plastics, and sea-water pipes, may also be coated.
