Abstract

1407421 Road rollers RAYGO Inc 27 Sept 1972 [4 Feb 1972] 5335/72 Heading B7H A machine for compacting soil and the like, e.g. a road roller, includes a drum 6 which is vibrated by rotating shafts 20 which carry eccentric masses 13, at least part of the masses 13 being radially movable to vary the amplitude of the vibrations. As described the drum 6 is mounted by bearings 12 (Fig. 2) on plates 10 which are connected to the frame 9 by elastic blocks 11 so that vibration is not imparted to the rest of the machine. The shafts 20 are mounted in bearings 19 in the drum 6, are connected by a tube 23 and are rotated by an hydraulic motor 22, Each shaft 20 carries an eccentric mass 13 consisting of a large fixed weight 25 on one side of the shaft 20 and a smaller movable weight 26 on the opposite side of the shaft 20. The smaller weight 26 is connected to the piston-rod 34 of a piston 35 in cylinder 33, the two cylinders 33 being connected by line 46 and valve 38 to a pressure accumulator 37 (Fig. 5). With the valve 38 closed the fluid trapped in cylinders 33 holds the weights 26 close to the shafts 20 to produce vibrations of maximum amplitude. When the valve 38 is opened by the driver centrifugal force moves the weights 26 outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4, to produce vibrations of minimum amplitude. The weights 26 are moved back to their first position by the pressure in accumulator 37 when the shafts 20 stop rotating. The control system includes an arrangement for preventing an excessively high frequency of vibration consisting of a pressure sensitive switch 56 which stops the motor 22 when the pressure in line 46, generated by the centrifugal forces exerted by weights 26, rises above a predetermined value.
