1406435 Fuel injection pumps BRYCE BERGER Ltd 28 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 55462/71 Heading F1A In a fuel injection pump comprising a plunger 10 reciprocable in a cylinder barrel 8 and having a helical fuel control groove 16 co-operable with a spill port 14, fuel leaking between the plunger and the barrel enters a circumferential groove 19 in the plunger and passes to low-pressure through a leakage groove 20 when the latter registers with a leakage port 21. The leakage groove 20 is positioned on the plunger so as to move out of register with the leakage port 21 prior to the fuel control groove 16 registering with the spill port 14. This ensures that the grooves 19, 20 are closed when leakage is occurring at maximum pressure, whereby some fuel traverses the groove 19 and lubricates the lower part of the plunger.
