Abstract

1404357 Vehicle safety system ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP 14 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971 22 May 1972] 57774/72 Heading B7H A vehicle safety system includes a seat switch 34 which provides an output when the seat is occupied and a second switch for association with a seat belt to provide an output depending on whether the belt is in position to restrain an occupant, and disabling means for preventing operation of the vehicle starter motor until the outputs indicate that the seat has first been occupied and then the belt has been positioned to restrain the seated occupant. The positive terminal of battery 10 is connected to ignition switch 12, starter switch 14, and gear selector switch 16 which is only open when a forward gear is engaged, but is closed in neutral, park, or reverse. A safety switch 18, open when the seat belts are not engaged, supplies power to a starter coil 20 associated with the vehicle starter when switches 12, 14 and 16 are closed. An activator circuit 22 energizes a display 24 having a buzzer to warn the vehicle driver that the seat belt is not properly fastened. An emergency switch 26 allows a single start without completing the required belt fastening sequence and supplies power to a stall circuit 28 which senses through a vacuum switch 30 whether the engine is running. The stall circuit 28 allows restarting after stalling without the belt being correctly fastened, since the vacuum switch remains closed for a time after the engine has stopped. The circuit 28 is connected to one or more seat units 32 each including a seat sensor switch 34 closed by the presence of a seat occupant and a jostle circuit 36 which inhibits an output if the switch 34 is only momentarily closed. The circuit 36 supplies a normally open switch 38, associated with the seat belt retractor, and a second switch 40 opened when the belt is drawn from the retractor. When either switch 38 or 40 is closed and the switches 26 or 28 have not been actuated the safety switch 18 is open, thus inhibiting the starter coil, but energizing display means 24. Normal starting can only occur if the seat is not occupied or if the occupant sits on the seat while the belt is fully retracted and is subsequently extended.
