Abstract

1402632 Cryogenic probes WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 23 Nov 1972 [2 Feb 1972] 4864/ 72 Heading A5R A self-contained hand-held cryogenic probe comprises a compartment 5 for receiving a sealed capsule 46 containing compressed gas, the compartment being movable relatively to a body member 6 to cause a needle tube 10 carried thereby to move relatively to the capsule-seal to pierce it and convey the gas, via a manually-controlled valve, to a second tube 14 from which it escapes into an expansion chamber 16 adjacent to a probe-tip 26, the chamber and tip being thereby cooled by Joule-Thomson effect the relative diameters and fluid resistances of the tubes 10, 14 being such that there is negligible pressure-drop across the valve and that substantially all the fluid-expansion occurs at the end of the second tube. Lateral outlets 22, 24 at the body-end of the chamber 16 enable the expanded gas to vent to atmosphere. The valve comprises a transversely-bored plunger 40 mounted resiliently by elastomeric diaphragms 28, 30 so that manual depression on a button 38 aligns the bore 42 with the tubes 10, 14 to permit passage of the compressed gas.
