Abstract

1402626 Automatic control for I C engines PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Sept 1972 [4 Sept 1971] 40579/72 Heading G3N [Also in Division F1] In a system for supplying an air/fuel mixture to an I.C. engine having its cylinders 2 connected to a common air induction pipe 4 by way of an intake manifold 3, and a fuel supply metering fuel to the induction pipe, a 'tame' differentiator 40 is provided to receive a signal from a pressure transducer 42 located in the manifold 3, the output of the differentiator being arranged to influence the injection period of a fuel metering member which opens into the induction pipe 4 or the manifold 3. A 'tame' differentiator is one which provides a 'tame' pulse which decays exponentially if it receives a stepped input signal such as is provided by the pressure transducer for sudden acceleration or deceleration. Thus, during acceleration, the output of the differentiator acts to increase the injection period of the metering member, which increase gradually decreases due to the exponential effect. During deceleration, the opposite effect is obtained. As shown, the fuel supply is a carburetter which continuously supplies fuel to the induction pipe 4 via orifice 5, and the fuel metering member is an electromagnetic valve 44 which is intermittently operated by an electronic device 43 which receives inputs from the differentiator 40 and various other parameter sensors. In an alternative, Fig. 4 (not shown), the fuel supply is a mechanical injection valve. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the fuel supply and the fuel metering member are combined as an electromagnetic injection valve which is intermittently operated by the electronic device 43. The action of the differentiator is also made variable with variations in engine speed. The signal from the transducer 42 is applied to the differentiator 40 intermittently, a sampling unit 41 being used to sample the pressure at the instants at which the inlet valves of the cylinders close.
