Abstract

1401830 Thermoplastic polymer moulding compositions CAPE ASBESTOS FIBRES Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56717/72 Heading C3P Moulding compositions comprise asbestosreinforced thermoplastic polymers stabilized with a stabilizer composition comprising (1) a phenolic antioxidant, (2) a synergistic sulphur compound and (3) boric oxide, boric acid, zinc borate or a nickel chelating agent. The polymer may be polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or a polyamide or polycarbonate. The antioxidant may be 4,4<SP>1</SP>-thio bis-(6-t-butylortho cresol) or tris-(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) cyanurate. The sulphur compound may be thiodipropionic acid or the distearyl or dilauryl ester thereof. The chelating agent may be nickel dimethyl, dibutyl or pentamethylene dithiocarbamate. The composition may be prepared as a concentrate, e.g. containing 60 to 80 per cent of asbestos, and diluted with further polymer. Examples describe compositions comprising polypropylene, asbestos and distearyl thiodipropionate together with (2) tris-(2-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-t-butylphenyl) butane and boric oxide, (3 and 5) tris - (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl) isocyanurate and boric oxide and (4) tris- (3,5 - di - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl)isocyanurate and nickel dibutyl dithiocarbamate. The composition may be used in making underbonnet components for cars, e.g. heater units, fan shrouds and carburetter air cleaners.
