Abstract

140,107. Soc. Anon. Astra, and Kapferer, H. Sept. 18, 1916. Steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.- Relates to a servo-motor device for operating parts subjected to considerable resistance, such as the ailerons of aircraft, and comprises a screw motor having reversible blades, so as to 'be driven in either direction by the movement of the vehicle through the air, and adapted to transmit the travel of a control member, such as a hand wheel or lever, and as soon as the desired travel has been effected to restore automatically the blades of the motor to the inoperative position. The blades 1 of the screw motor have trunnions 2 rotatable in sleeves 3 by the axial movements of a spindle 13, arranged in a hub 4 and engaging crank pins 14 on the trunnions 2. These axial movements, which are produced by the control operating through a worm wheel 16 and' worm 15, shift the blades 1 from an inoperative position, and the motor is rotated by the air in a direction corresponding to the direction of movement of the control. The rotation is transmitted by a worm 8 and worm-wheel 9 to a spindle 10 carrying a pulley, to which are attached the cables for operating the ailerons or the like, and during this operation the rotating worm 15, engaging the stationary wheel 16, moves the spindle 13 axially back until the blades 1 are restored to the inoperative position, when the motor stops, To prolong the movement transmitted by the servomotor beyond that corresponding to the maximum axial movement of the spindle 13, an elastic device may be inserted between the wheel 16 and the control. For example, two springs 18, 19 are inserted in the chain 20 connecting the wheel 16 to a wheel 21 on the spindle of the control part. The elastic device may be arranged on the spindle of the wheel 16 or on the spindle of the control lever or hand wheel. In a modification, Fig. 5, the control spindle a is arranged to control either the chain 20 of the servo-motor b, connected to the parts to be operated by cables c or the transmission d connected to the same parts.
