Abstract

1400477 Selective signalling NORTHERN ILLINOIS GAS CO 25 Sept 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 44200/72 Heading G4H In a read-out system, a control unit can select one of a plurality of remote units by means of coded signals sent over an electrical power supply line, the selected remote unit responding by sensing readout data over the supply line to the control unit. As disclosed, the coded selection signal consists of two BCD digits and is followed by eight "ones", and all are sent by frequency-modulating a carrier. At each remote unit, the signals are demodulated, filtered and used to derive clock signals which shift the two BCD digits into a shift register, and if they are recognized by a code comparator, the encoded output of an indicating device (utility meter or copy counter of a copying machine) is inserted into the shift register and shifted out by the clock signals derived from the eight "ones", to be transmitted to the control unit by frequency-modulating a (different) carrier. Operation is duplex. Simplex operation is possible instead. In another embodiment, there are a plurality of control units with respective groups of remote units, e.g. one control unit per building, and a central station, which may be mobile, supplies the selection signals to the control units and receives the readout signals from them, either by radio or using multi-frequency tones over telephone lines.
