Abstract

1397604 Converters MOSKOVSKY ORDENA LENINA I ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI INSTITUT IN ZHENEROV ZHELEZNODOROZHNOGO TRANSPORTA and TALLINSKY ELEKTROTEKHNICHESKY ZAVODIMENI MI KALININA USSR 6 June 1972 26225/72 Heading H2F Power supply apparatus associated with a railway locomotive comprises a polyphase generator, means for converting the output thereof to a single phase output, means for controlling and adjusting the frequency of the single phase output, means for preventing incorrect operation of the converting and so prevent the flow of circulating current and means for protecting the converter against overload currents. An alternator 2 driven by a diesel engine of a locomotive by a shaft 1 has two three phase output windings 3, 4 displaced at 30 degrees to one another and an excitation field winding 5 controlled by a voltage stabilizing unit 6. The output windings 3, 4 are connected to a cyclo-converter 7 comprising two groups 8, 9 of thyristors connected in parallel opposition, each group 8, 9 comprising two bridge circuits connected in series. The output of the cyclo-converter 7 is single phase at a frequency determined by a pulse generator 56, the output at terminal 38 feeding the train loads 39, radio interference being suppressed by a diode bridge 55 and capacitor 54. Firing pulses for the thyristors 11-33 of the converter 7 are provided by pulse generators 60, 61 under the control of two bi-stable devices 57, 58 and the master pulse generator 56, power for the control system 56-61 being provided by a unit 62 when an initiating switch 58 is closed. In order to prevent thyristors in the groups 8, 9 firing simultaneously a zero load current detector 34 is provided which provides an input for the bistable devices 57, 58 such that the pulse generators 60, 61 can only provide firing pulses for the thyristors 11-33 at zero current crossings, the control system being provided with a delay device to ensure that the thyristors in one group are extinguished before the thyristors in the other group are rendered conductive. Protection for the converter 7 is provided by current limiting reactors 65 and current transformers 63 the signals from which are operative to inhibit the bi-stable devices 57, 58 and thus to prevent the production by the pulse generators 60, 61 of firing pulses for the thyristors 11-13. The circuits for the devices 34, 56-61 and 62 of the control circuit are described and include elements such as transistors, saturable reactors, thyristors and diode bridges.
