Abstract

1396976 Cooling beds DAVY-LOEWY Ltd 11 Jan 1974 [28 Nov 1972] 54895/72 Heading B3M [Also in Division B8] A walking beam cooling bed has a series of movable beams 2 which are located between fixed beams (not shown), and are shifted vertically and horizontally by independent assemblies, the beams being interrupted in their downward movement when they are level with the fixed beams. This interruption allows hot metal plates to be supported by both sets of beams for a period before they are shifted along the bed. The beams 2 are movable horizontally by hydraulic piston and cylinder units (not shown), and are supported by rollers 4 on beams 6 carrying rams 8. When the beams are shifted back and forth horizontally by links 32, the ramps move over rollers 10 to raise and lower the beams 6. The beams 2 are therefore moved vertically, but not horizontally (due to the rollers 4). The links 32 are shifted by levers 30 oscillated by an hydraulic unit 18. To prevent the weight of the workpieces and beams from putting an unnecessary strain on the unit 18 when the vertical movement of the beams 2 is interrupted, the interruption is effected during only the downward movement. A pivotable detent 48, Fig. 2, is shifted into the path of a slider 40 to lock the links 32 in a central position (corresponding to the fixed and movable beams being level), and serves to take the loading off the unit 18.
