Abstract

1396669 Automatic current regulation MOTOROLA Inc 17 Sept 1973 [3 Oct 1972] 43438/73 Heading G3X A current source is connected in series with a P.V. junction device and a semiconductor device having unity gain so that a constant voltage is produced by means of a feedback path at the junction of the two devices. This voltage controls an output device which produces a regulated current. As shown, a supply terminal 16 is connected to a current source in the form of a field effect transistor 14 which may be replaced by a resistor. Current is thus supplied to a diode 26 whose dynamic admittance is equal to the transconductance of a transistor 34, so that the gain of the transistor is unity and the voltage at point 64 is held constant by the action of feedback transistor 36, regardless of changes in the current supplied by the FET 14. The constant voltage is used to control an output transistor 54 so that a regulated current is supplied to a load 20 which may be operational amplifier circuitry. The current regulator may be constructed as an integrated circuit. Variations in the voltage at point 64 caused by temperature changes are compensated by similar variations in the baseemitter voltage of transistor 54.
