Abstract

1395003 Fifth wheel couplings HOPE TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 25 May 1972 [1 March 1971] 5644/71 Heading B7T A fifth wheel comprises a plate 1 provided with a slot 4 and adapted to be pivoted to a tractor by trunnions 2, a spindle 8 rigidly mounting an arm 9 being pivoted in lugs 7 and rotatable to move the arm between a lowered inoperative position and a raised operative position in which it either directly abuts a projection 14 extending from a king-pin 8 or has interposed between it and the projection a pair of wedges 17, 18 movable to and from their operative position on a double-threaded screw 19, the arm thus serving to prevent the king- pin leaving the slot. The arm may be used alone or in conjunction with known clamping jaws. Where the arm directly abuts projection 14 the spindle 8 is eccentrically located in lugs 7 so that in its operative position the arm is firmly located. The king-pin may be rigidly connected with a hub 48 and formed integrally with a sleeve 51 and a tongue 50 which acts as member 14, or the tongue and sleeve rotate about the king-pin.
