Abstract

1394094 Selective signalling; card reader SIGMA SYSTEMS Inc 15 May 1972 [17 May 1971] 22634/72 Headings G4H and G4M When an item is withdrawn from a collection of items, e.g. a lending library, by one of a number of users, a label associated with the item and identification means associated with the user are both machine-read to produce electrical item and user identification signals which are stored together, the stored signals being deleted on return of the item to the collection. The storage is at a central computer which also contains stored information relating to overdue items, reservations, expiry (of right to borrow from the library collection), delinquency (fines owed), users, items and statistical information. A console in the library communicating with the computer, has a reader for item labels, and (for checking out items) a reader for user identifying cards and "confirm (OK)", "expired" and "delinquent" lights, and (for checking in items), "paid", "damaged" and "clear" buttons, a "reverse" light and an "amount due" display, Separate consoles for check-in and check-out may be provided. "Overdue" and "reserved item available" notices are automatically printed out at the computer. A keyboard and CRT display unit and a teletypewriter unit may also communicate in both directions with the computer so that, e.g. information may be entered regarding new users and reservation requests. Readers.-The label is in the form of a trapezoid for registration of the reader which is positioned by hand, optical sensing of dark and white bit areas on the label being employed The reader for the user card has a slot into which the card is pushed against springs for sensing of bit holes by spring-loaded balls actuating microswitches, the card having a slot which actuates another microswitch similarly to reset the system on withdrawal of the card. Either reader can use optical, magnetic or mechanical sensing. Dark and white areas may be replaced by coloured areas. Infra-red is also mentioned.
