Abstract

1392207 Temperature change indicator A LATTER & CO Ltd and P E CANETTYCLARKE 9 May 1973 [10 Feb 1972] 6349/72 Heading G1D A temperature change, for example a temperature departure from a required temperature in a cold store for foodstuffs, is indicated by the initiation and extent of flow of microgranular material, for example sand, through an aperture which is initially closed by a bi-metallic strip. Since the dimensions of the strip-thickness t and length L are related to the strip deflection d and temperature change T by the equation where K is a constant for any given strip material suitable choice of strip dimensions will initiate strip flow at any required temperature change. The apparatus comprises a box having a sloping partition which separates an upper compartment from a lower. By reversal of the bi-metallic strip, flow may be initiated by a lowering of temperature. More than two vertically spaced compartments may be used to indicate a series of temperature variations. Layers of different coloured sand may be initially placed in the upper compartment so that the duration of a temperature change may be more easily estimated. The action of the strip may, alternatively, unlatch a ratchet wheel of a timing mechanism to record the duration. The aperture is preferably approximately eight times the grain size in diameter.
