Abstract

1391955 Electromagnets BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd 3 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 32480/72 Heading H1P [Also in Divisions F1 and G1] An I.C. engine intake or exhaust poppet valve 15 has opening and closing solenoid coils 41 and 42. Springs 22 and 24 urge the valve 15 to a closed position and springs 36 and 38 to an open position, the springs alone positioning the valve partially open. Signals which energize the coils 41 and 42 are generated electrically in response to photoelectric means responsive to engine speed and load to control the valve timing, by the drum 50 which is rotated at half engine speed. The negative 57 has nine channels (60 to 68), Fig. 4 (not shown), which control the passage of light between respective pairs of emitters and switches on the carriers 53, 54. The signals from the switches are fed to an electronic circuit, Fig. 5 (not shown), connected to the ignition, the coils (81 to 84) of the valves and a tachometer display (115).
