Abstract

1391525 Thin films YARSLEY RESEARCH LABORATORIES Ltd 4 May 1973 [8 May 1972] 21366/72 Heading B5B Continuous thin polymer films are made by coating a solution 11 of the polymer onto a moving support web 16 and drying the coating obtained to remove the solvent and leave a thin film of the polymer on the support web, the coating being formed on the support web by roller coating using a driven roll 10 which is partially immersed in the coating solution contained in a trough 12, in which the trough is provided with an overflow 22 at the desired liquid level in the trough and is supplied with fresh coating solution at 21 at a greater rate than that at which it is removed by being coated onto the support web so that there is a continuous overflow of coating solution from the trough and the concentration of polymer in the coating solution in the trough is maintained constant. The rate of overflow of coating solution may be at least half the rate at which coating solution is coated on to the support web. In this way highly uniform thin films of cellulose esters and ethers, polystyrene, polyurethane, polysulphones and polycarbonates may be obtained, 0À5 to 6 microns thick. The production of polycarbonate films is exemplified.
