Abstract

1385780 Jointing by stamping; making nozzles and filters L H MOTT 19 May 1972 23609/72 Headings B3A and B3Q [Also in Division F2] A seal is formed between a shoulder on one member and the wall of a cavity in another member by flattening a corrugated member so as to extend the member into engagement with the parts to be sealed. A porous stainless-steel polymer filter 10 is sealed in a casing 13 by means of rings 20 which are initially of corrugated form, Fig. 2. A spinnerette disc 16 and a screen 19 are assembled beneath the filter, the screen-thickness plus the depth of a lower shoulder 12 in the filter being equal to the thickness of the lower corrugated member 20. The depth of an upper shoulder 11 is equal to the thickness of the upper member 20. Pressure of an annular member 23 seals the assembly against a soft metal ring 17 and flattens the rings 20. The filter 10 may be pressed from the casing 13 for cleaning and replaced using new rings 20. A plurality of filters may be assembled simultaneously, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another form, Fig. 7 (not shown), a disc (38) which need not be of porous metal and which supports filter tubes (43) is sealed in a housing by flattening a corrugated ring (40). The filter casings may be of various shapes, Figs. 9-11 (not shown). The corrugated sealing rings may be of aluminium or, if they are to penetrate the surfaces to be sealed, of stainless-steel. In this case they may seal between filter holders 82, Fig. 12, and a housing 80. The filters 81 may be soldered and the holders 82 which are sealed by rings 89 upon the application of pressure against rings 85 by a plate 88. Release of clamping bolts 87 permits removal of the filters. In another form, Fig. 14 (not shown), the holder (92) is brazed to the filter tube (91). Plates and pipe flanges 100, 101, Fig. 16, may be sealed by compression of a corrugated ring 104.
