Abstract

1382806 Trolleys J S SIEDER 18 April 1972 [5 Feb 1971 9 July 1971] 4051/71 and 32373/71 Heading B7B A wheeled trolley, e.g. for luggage has wheels 32 provided with self-applying brakes releasable by pushing or pulling the horizontal handrail 53 of the trolley which is biased to a central position. The framework of the trolley may comprise a W-shaped base 10, the forward end of which carries non-brakable, castor wheels 26 and the rearward end of which carries the brakable, non- castor wheels 32 and is attached to an upright rear frame comprising hollow tubes 16 through which extend brake rods 41 which are urged by springs 54 towards locking engagement with an apertured drum 38 integral with each wheel 32. The hand-rail 53 is mounted by means of studs 52 on two short, transverse rollers 49 to which are pivotally and eccentrically attached an extension 46 of each brake rod 41 so that when the handle 53 is pushed or pulled to move the trolley, the rods 41 are raised against the springs 54 and the wheels 32 are freed. In a modification, shoe brakes may be used, the linings being urged toward the tyres of the wheels 32 by strong springs. The plane of the base 10 is at a sufficient angle to the horizontal to allow identical trolleys to be nested, means being provided to lift clear of the ground the braked wheels 32 of the nested trolleys so that they are mobile.
