Abstract

1380562 Storage and retrieval of articles T M LEWIS 18 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 44530/71 Headings B8E and B8A In a storage system rack units 4 containing tiers of stock articles are withdrawn from storage lanes 1 and passed along a work lane 9 to enable stock units to be retrieved from the rack units, the lanes 1 and 9 extending between transfer lanes 7 and 12, and a first transfer carriage 8, movable along the transfer lane 9, 7, being operative either to extract a rack unit from the work lane 9 or insert a rack unit into a storage lane 1 at the same time as a second transfer carriage 13, movable along the transfer lane 12, is operative either to insert a rack unit into the work lane 9 or extract a rack unit from a transfer lane 1. Back-up storage lanes 2 and a backup work lane 11 are provided, rack units being transferred between lanes by the transfer carriages 8, 13 or auxiliary transfer carriages 10, 14. A fixed lift 15 is situated at the input end of the work lane 9 and comprises lifting platforms 15 flanking the work lane and each provided with a telescopic fork carriage 17 movable lengthwise of the platform. A similar lift 18 is provided adjacent the back-up work lane 11. Inclined conveyers 19 are also provided adjacent the work lane 9, a platform 20 being movable along each conveyer 19. An operator stands on the platform 20 and picks articles from the rack units for placement on the respective conveyer 19. The lift 15 feeds empty or partially empty rack units to a conveyer 21, situated on a floor above the storage system, for transfer to a holding space 25 for reloading, the loaded rack units either being fed into a store 22 or on to a conveyer 33 for transfer to the lift 18 and return to the storage system. The store 22 is connected to the lift 18 by conveyers 26, 27. Full rack units are removed from the reserve work lane by the lift 18 and passed by the conveyers 26, 27 and conveyers 28 to the lift 15 for transfer to the work lane 9. The conveyers 19 feed articles to a sorting conveyer 23 for transfer to discharge shoots 24. The rack units have a longitudinal base member supported by rollers and are ejected from a transfer carriage by a piston and rotatable wheels which grip the base member, the rack unit being drawn on to a transfer carriage by the wheels.
