Abstract

1380049 Ultrasonic inspection devices NIPPON KOKAN KK 30 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 60865/71 Heading H4D A hot-rolled plate is tested for flaws by ultrasonic probes which scan each edge of the plate and intermediate regions, the probe movements being in an automatic sequence and correlated with movement of the plate. In the Fig. 1 embodiment, the test sequence is as follows. The plate 5, guided by fixed guides 7c, 7d and movable guides 7a, 7b, is moved longitudinally until its leading edge abuts a stop 6, which is then lowered. Guides 7a, 7b are urged against the plate edge and, in conjunction with computer 9, serve to gauge the plate width. A probe 3b is then moved laterally to align it with the plate edge, under the control of computer 9. Gating circuits associated with the probes are now adjusted with the aid of a cathode ray tube and probe 1 is moved to scan the leading edge of plate 5. Plate 5 is then advanced, its side edges are tested by probes 3a, 3b, and its central region is tested by a group of probes 4 selected according to the plate width as measured by computer 9. Stop 6 is raised again and plate 5 is moved back to abut it, whereupon probe 2 is moved to scan the plate trailing edge. Pulse-echo testing by the probes is envisaged.
