Abstract

1379566 Vacuum sewage systems WART1 SILA AB OY and CEMENTA AB 14 Dec 1971 [15 Dec 1970] 57957/71 Heading E1C [Also in Division Fl] A vacuum sewage system receives sewage from a source, via pipe 5, the sewage passing alternately to each of two tanks 1, 2 (although there may in fact be more than two tanks operating in a similar manner) and being discharged from one of the tanks while the other tank is filling by the operation of means including a vacuum source 16 which is preferably a vacuum pump the outlet of which also provides an air source, valves 9-12 in the inlets and respective outlets of the tanks, and a changeover valve 15 by which it is arranged that whenever vacuum is applied to one tank air is supplied to the other tank. Associated means is provided whereby when vacuum is applied to a tank its inlet valve is open and its outlet valve is shut, and vice-versa when air is applied to the tank. This means preferably comprises control means 20 responsive to leveldetector switches 18, 19 for controlling the valve 15, and pneumatic connections 21, 22 by which the pressure in the tanks controls the inlet valves 9, 10. The control means 20 also controls the outlet valves 11, 12 such that each is opened when the corresponding inlet valve is closed. Instead of exhaust air from the vacuum pump, another source of compressedair or atmospheric air may be used. A sewer 8 receives the sewage from the tanks 1, 2. The system may include a pumping arrangement for pumping drain water from a collecting reservoir 23, the arrangement consisting of a reversing valve 30 which is periodically changed over by a level-detecting switch and timing mechanism so as to supply alternatively vacuum and compressed air from the vacuum pump 16 to a tank 25, the arrangement including valves such as outlet valve 28 which are operated in conjunction with the valve 30 to give the desired pumping action whereby the drain water is first elevated to the tank 25 until the latter is full, and is then discharged to a sewer 24.
