Circulating or passing liquids through matcrials; piling fabrics in rope form. - Relates to plaiting-down apparatus for bleaching-kiers and the like, and consists of apparatus capable of swinging in the kier and about its vertical axis, and having its plaiting-arm and rotating drawrollers capable of reciprocating radially within the kier to plait down the fabric in rope form, and capable of saturating the fabrics by means of liquors from a hollow bonnet and arm fed by valved connexion through a stand-pipe above the kier. A hollow plaiting-arm 5, Fig. 1, is carried in a T-shaped trunnion 1 suspended within the kier by a shaft 29 passing through the shell 45 and through the stand-pipe 35 to the trunnion 1 and The trunnion 1 has a bearing 2 guided in a hollow bonnet 3 containing a dished valve 7, ports 4 in which allow liquor to pass from the pipe 36 through the stand-pipe 35 to the trunnion 1 and the hollow arm 5. The valve 7 normally covers ports 6 leading direct to the kier. The countershaft 32 also drives the shaft 34. The fabric passes through guides 19, 20 to the draw-rollers 8 - - 11, one rope of fabric at each side. The arm 5 is meanwhile swung and reciprocated while, as the fabric runs through the draw-rollers, it is saturated with liquor from the arm 5 before it passes through the nozzles 17, 18 to the kier, where it is laid in folds. When the plaiting is completed, the apparatus is lifted by the screw and nut 44, whereby ports 6 are opened and liquid connexion to the arm 5 closed by the top of the trunnion 1, liquor being thus admitted direct to the kier during the boiling process. When used with open circular kiers, the bonnet 3 is bolted direct to the stand-pipe 35 and is supported in guides over the kier. When applied to open straight-sided kiers, the stand-pipe is mounted on a wheeled carriage running on rails 19<1>, 20<1>, Fig. 5, in girders 19, 20. The girder 19 carries a rack 52 connected by gearing 49, 50 with the shaft 29. The machine thus runs to and fro along the rails, and the worm 21 is carried on a long sleeve on a squared countershaft 32 to allow of this motion. The trunnion is carried by bolts 51 from the stand-pipe 35 The pipe 36<1> is made flexible. The arm 5 and the draw-rollers are operated as before.
