Abstract

1377703 Luminescent materials KODAK Ltd 1 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25717/72 Heading C4S A scintillator composition comprises 0À005 to 10% by wt. of a scintallator aminocoumarin compound in a transparent organic liquid or plastic solvent, the scintillator being of Formula I wherein X is an azido, hydrazino, monoalkyl substituted hydrazino, dialkyl substituted hydrazino, monoaryl substituted hydrazino or diaryl substituted hydrazino group, each R is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or cycloalkyl group or the two groups R may form a cyclic secondary amino group. R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group, and y an integer from 0 to 3. The scintillator compound may be a secondary scintillator and a wt. ratio of 1 to 10<SP>-3</SP> times of primary scintillator is used. Preparation of specific compounds is described. Many components of the scintillators are exemplified and Table I lists some specific compounds. Many plastic and liquid solvents are included. The scintillator may be added to the plastic solvent while molten, e.g. as in moulding or casting, or mixed with a monomer and polymerization catalyst, the mixture being polymerized to provide the scintillator in a plastic organic polymer.. Primary scintillators are given in combinations with the aminocoumarin as the secondary scintillator. Addenda such as supplementary solvents, solubility aids or gels may be included. Detection and counting of nuclear radiation (e.g. #, γ, X-rays), is mentioned, scintillator wavelengths being compatible with photomultipliers.
