Abstract

1375936 Derivatives of living polymers MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Aug 1972 [18 Aug 1971 9 Dec 1971 23 Dec 1971] 38502/72 Headings C3P and C3B Living polymers, prepared by polymerizing a conjugated diene or a mixture of such a diene with a vinyl or vinylidene monomer of formula CH 2 = C(R 1 R 2 ) where R 1 is H or alkyl and R 2 is an aryl pyridyl group in the presence of an alkali metal or an organo-alkli metal compound, are reacted with a halogenoalkylene oxide in a proportion of 0À5-2 moles per mole of polymer. The products contain pendant -OM groups which are readily converted to -OH groups by treatment with a protonic acid, e.g. HCl in methanol. In the examples, living polybutadiene or butadiene/styrene copolymer (Ex. 6) are reacted with epichlorohydrin and the products acidified to give pendant -OH groups in varying number. The -OH group-containing products may be subjected to further reactions, of which the following are exemplified: curing with either toluene diisocyanate or a polyaryl polyisocyanate (Examples 1-13), optionally in admixture with a polyhydroxypolyester (Examples 7-11), polytetramethylene ether glycol (Example 12 or polypropylene ether glycol (Example 13) and with carbon black and dibutyl tin dilaurate; reaction with phthalic (Example 14) or succinic (Example 15) anhydrides to esterify the OH groups and produce pendant carboxyl groups which may be cured by reaction with an epichlorohydrin/bisphenol A epoxy compound (Example 14); and reaction with maleic anhydride (Examples 16, 18, 20), methyl methacrylate (Example 17) or acrylic chloride (Examples 19, 21) to introduce additional double bonds, the products optionally being further reacted with styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide (Examples 16-19) or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide/cobalt naphthenate (Example 20).
