Abstract
1371646 Cleats C B COCHRANE 29 Nov 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 40908/71 Heading E2A A jamming cleat, of moulded plastics or metal, for ropes &c comprises a body portion 1 with an open ended slot 4 extending throughout its length, and one or more jaws 9 mountable so as to be longitudinal slidable in the slot. The body portion and the or each jaw are so constructed and arranged that longitudinal sliding movement of the or each jaw in the slot with respect to the body portion causes the or each jaw to move into and out of a rope gripping position, and the slot along its length between its open ends provide unimpeded access to the interior of the body portion, whereby to permit a rope or cable to be moved laterally into or out of the slot. As shown, the walls 7, 8 of the slot 4 converge and the toothed jaws are correspondingly tapered and have lugs 23, Fig. 10, which fit in guide channels 22; alternatively a single jaw holds the rope 13, Fig. 8, against a side wall 3 which is planar and roughened or toothed. In modifications, (a) the teeth 11 are inclined or curved, (b) the jaws have a plurality of individual teeth arranged in aligned or staggered rows for gripping webbing straps, (c) the jaws are connected by a resilient loop 25, Fig. 21, or a hinge unit whereby the jaws are urged against the walls 7, 8, or by flexible dowels whereby the jaws are inclined towards one another, (d) the jaws 32, 33, Fig. 26, are connected by tenons 50 and recesses 51 to a toothed carrier 34. The cleat may be releasably secured in a channel member, having curved walls 6', 7', Fig. 31, the jaws comprising a plurality of teeth hinged together and each provided with a lug engageable in a guide channel in the cleat body.
