Abstract

1369150 Road surface materials; paving BUNZL & BIACH AG 23 Oct 1972 [28 Oct 1971] 48801/72 Heading E1G [Also in Division C3] Road surfaces and road surfacing materials are prepared by preheating mineral particles to a temperature not higher than the decomposition temperature of the thermoplastics material used subsequently, and subsequently mixing the preheated particles with thermoplastics scrap material and moulding the mixture into sheet form or applying it directly to a road foundation. The road surfacing material may be in the form of sheets or tiles, and may be bonded to the foundation by a bitumen adhesive or by heating the surfaces to be bonded, followed by rolling to effect combination. The thermoplastics material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride, optionally mixed with mineral oil or bitumen. The mineral may be crushed basalt, optionally with quartz sand or limestone. In examples (1) a preformed sheet of polyethylene and dolomite particles is bonded by heating to a bitumen/gravel foundation, (2) preformed tiles of polyethylene and basalt are bonded to a concrete foundation with melted bitumen, and (3) a polyethylene / basalt mixture is applied directly to a bitumen/gravel foundation. The surfaces may be improved by application of further mineral particles to the hot surfaces.
