Abstract
1367618 Regenerators; cold accumulators U S PHILIPS CORP 21 Oct 1971 48948/71 Headings F4K and F4H A regenerator, particularly for use in cold-gas refrigerators, comprises a housing 1 filled with a mass of spherical heat storage elements 2 consisting of hollow carbon spheres having gaspermeable walls and filled with helium. The spheres have an outer diameter in the range 5-150 Á and a wall thickness of between 1 and 2 Á. In the manufacture of the regenerator, the spheres are simultaneously evacuated and then exposed to a helium atmosphere, helium gas diffusing through the permeable walls into the cavities in the spheres and being retained therein; the hollow spheres are heated during evacuation. The regenerator is closed at either end by coverplates 3 provided with apertures (not shown) for the inlet and outlet of medium which flows through the regenerator.
