Abstract

1360568 Plastics hose GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 27 June 1972 [26 July 1971] 29949/72 Heading F2P [Also in Division B5] Corrugated, reinforced hose 1 (Fig. 5) is made by producing a tubular, cylindrical non-corrugated blank of reinforced elastomeric material (9) (see Fig. 2, not reproduced), placing the blank in a cylindrical mould 10 (Fig. 4) defining corrugations having a maximum diameter substantially equal to the outside diameter of the blank, applying fluid pressure to the blank to hold it in contact with the mould walls, and heating to vulcanize the elastomeric material. The blank is formed by extruding an inner tube of synthetic or natural rubber, covering with a knit layer 7 of nylon, rayon or polyester, and passing the whole through an extruder to receive a cover 8 of rubber. Mould halves 11, 12 (Fig. 4) are closed by a conventional vulcanizing platen press, sizing and clamping plugs 17, 18 are inserted in the blank ends, and air or steam injected through a plug cavity 19 while the platens are heated. After removing from the mould 10, a preformed, rust proof resilient wire 21 (Fig. 5) is twisted or threaded inside the hose body for helical corrugations (or separate rings are inserted into each corrugation for annular corrugations). The flexible.hose (for car cooling-systems) has non- corrugated ends 3, 4.
