Abstract

1360494 Pneumatic conveyers J GROLLET 25 June 1971 29986/71 Heading B8A [Also in Divisions F2 and B5] Material of different characteristics is stored in respective containers 14 1 -14 n according to the individual characteristic, e.g. different colour plastics material, each container being connected via pipes 25 1 -25 n to a selector device 12 coupled by a single pipe 26 to for example an extruding machine 10. The selector device 12 comprises a plate 50 with a series of apertures 51 to which respective ones of the pipes 25 1 -25 n are coupled. A toothed wheel 54 is axially slidably mounted in the plate 50 and mounts one end of a tube 53 rotatably supported for axial movement at its other end in an adaptor plate 67 to which the pipe 26 is connected. A drive motor 62 is adapted to rotate the wheel 54 and an actuator 80 is adapted to move said wheel 54 axially, such that on selection of an appropriate material for the extrudate 7 the wheel 54 is moved away from the plate and is then rotated by the motor 62 until the pipe 53 is in alignment with the appropriate aperture 51 whereupon the wheel is returned to its position against the plate 50. Movement of the materials along the appropriate pipes is achieved by a pump 30 mounted above the extruder. The outlet end of the pipe 26 discharges the material into a hopper 31 movable from a position over the inlet to the extruder to a position over a container 39 into which material can be discharged during periods of change over from one material to another. A compartment 44 in the hopper contains material of different characteristics to either the initial or new material to be supplied to the extruder and is emptied during the return movement of the hopper to provide a clear indication of the change over. The apparatus is said to enable a wire coating extruding machine to operate continuously. A control system, Fig. 6 (not shown), for the selector device and the hopper is described.
