Abstract
1357990 Coal desulphurization and gasification WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 11 Dec 1972 [11 Jan 1972] 57006/72 Heading C5E Coal is desulphurized and completely gasified in a plurality of fluidized beds through which a gas flow is conducted in opposition to a flow of crushed coal, which together with a calcium bearing material is introduced into a drying bed heated by hot gases and through a devolatilization and gasification bed to a combustion bed from which the ashes are removed, at least a portion of the gas stream being removed from the process before it enters the drying bed and the gases emanating from the drying bed returned to the combustion bed and recycled through the gasification and devolatilization beds. The calcium bearing material may be lime which is added to the crushed coal and the calcium sulphide formed is removed from the devolatilization and gasification bed. The coal may be first devolatilized in a separate bed from which the calcium sulphide is removed and then gasified in an additional fluidized bed. Ash is removed from the bottom of the combustion bed. The removed portion of the gas stream is conducted into a gas turbine having a compressor, a combustor, and a turbine portion which drives the compressor and generator, so that the turbine exhaust gases are essentially free of sulphur compounds. The hot gases passing through the drying bed consist of a portion of the turbine exhaust gases. The gas flow through the fluidized beds consists of pressurized air from the turbine compressor.
