Abstract

1356857 Moulding plastic materials VAKUUM VULK HOLDINGS Ltd 30 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 30642/71 Heading B5A Apparatus for the continuous production of tyre tread strip comprises two lines of intercommunicating and abutting open-ended moulds 1 supplied at stations 5 with moulding material, e.g. rubber, and then fed stepwise in opposite directions through a double press 4 comprising a fixed member 8 and movable members 10, 11 which, after each step of the moulds, are urged upwardly by hydraulic means 9 to subject the moulds to a predetermined pressure. Heating elements 7 may be provided and the filling station may comprise a vacuum chamber 17. The moulds are shorter than the press and the distance moved each step is less than the press length so that each mould may be pressed several times. The material in the moulds is separated from contact with the heating elements 7 by non-adhesive belts 19, 21 which also move stepwise. The completed moulded strips are received by drums 16; the empty moulds leaving one press are fed to the input side of the other. Fig. 2 shows consecutive moulds 1 with toothed connector plates 32, 34 at their sides and with inclined end abutment surfaces 36, 37. Each mould may have ribs on its base to provide a tread profile.
