Abstract

1355176 Detecting leaks in conduits NILS ÍSTBO A B 8 Feb 1973 6314/73 Heading G15 A leak detector for an oil conveying conduit comprises two conductors 18, 19 mounted along juxtaposed edges of two parallel bands 14, 15 which are made of a material which swells on contact with oil to close the gap between the conductors 18, 19. In Fig. 1, four bands 13-16 are held by a support 22 around conduit 10, and three pairs of conductors 18, 19 are provided in the gaps between the bands, the gaps being filled with pulverulent material. In Fig. 3, a pair of bands 13, 14 are wound in a spiral around the pipe, the outer edge of each band being bonded to the pipe. Alternatively a series of bands may be wound in a spiral to completely cover the conduit. When a leak occurs and a contact between a pair of conductors 18, 19 is made, a thyristor device 27 actuates a lamp 28 and an accoustic warning device 29, a green light 30 being then extinguished. A resistance measuring device 30 may be connected to each end of the pair of conductors in turn whereby the point of leakage may be located. The bands may be of a natural or artificial rubber such as polyisoprene, polybutadieneorethylene-propylene.
