Abstract

1354642 Making combustible gas CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUESCENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 22 June 1972 [29 June 1971 15 July 1971] 29259/72 Heading C5E An apparatus for making a gas containing H 2 and CO at high temperature, e.g. above 2000‹ C., e.g. for delivering to a shaft furnace, comprises a plasma flame generator 1...3 connected to a source of non-oxidizing gas (at 19), e.g. argon, and means 27 for injecting a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon into the flame 26, and means 28 for injecting an oxidizing gas, e.g. O 2 , into the hydrocarbon or into the flame 26 at or downstream of the place where the hydrocarbon meets the flame. The means 27, 28 are nozzles mounted on swivel joints 23, 24. In a modification, see Figs. 2a, 2b (not shown), the reactants are delivered coaxially through two concentric nozzles the axis of which is directed at right angles to three intersecting flames, the generators of which may be movable to vary the zone of contact of the reactants and the flames. In Fig. 1, the temperature and the shape of the flame may be regulated by adjusting the supply of argon, the voltage, and the position of the negative electrode 1, and the composition and temperature of the product gas by adjusting the rate of flow and orientation of the jets 27, 28. An inductive generator may be used to produce the flame.
