Nov. 15, 1918, Electro-magnetic switches.-In order to avoid the premature closing of an electro-magnetic lock-out switch, of the type having closing and holding-out coils 4, 5 operating on opposite ends of a centrally pivoted armature 1, during the first rush of current while the holding-out magnetic force is reaching its full holding-out value, the holding-out coil is shunted by a self-inductance or by a resistance having a negative temperature-coefficient, which further increases the pull of the holding-out magnet while the current is rising. Alternatively, the closing-winding may be shunted by a condenser, a non-inductive resistance, or a resistance having a positive temperature coefficient, which produces a lag in the building-up of the closing magnetization while the current is rising. Both coils may be shunted as described. The condenser or shunting resist. ances 14 are mounted on the base of the switch.
