Abstract

1351220 Annular filter element BENDIX CORP 22 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 29281/71 Heading B1D A filter element for oil in an I.C. engine is annular and pleated and comprises sections of surface filter medium 42 and depth filter medium 40 joined together to act in parallel, so that when the oil is cold and viscous the flow is mainly through sections 42 and the pressure drop is low, sections 42 subsequently clogging and section 40 giving more efficient filtration when the oil warms up. The depth filter medium may be wool, fibreglass or paper, and the surface filter medium may be wire mesh or woven cotton or nylon. The wire mesh end sections 42 in Fig. 5 are brazed, soldered, welded, glued or secured by epoxy resin to end caps 14, 16, and the media are glued or secured by resin to each other on lines 44. In Figs. 1, 3 (not shown), the two media are arranged in two sections only, either circumferentially or axially abutting.
