Abstract

1350519 Flushing sanitary closets MICROPHOR INC 14 June 1972 27877/72 Heading E1C A flushing system for a sanitary closet, particularly for use in a mobile installation or where there is a need to conserve water, comprises a bowl portion 14, a hollow base portion 16 in communication with the bowl via a slide valve 20, a solenoid valve 66 arranged to admit a predetermined amount of water to flush the bowl when the slide valve is open, and a relay valve 100 to admit compressed-air to the interior of the base portion 16 after the slide valve has re-closed to transfer the water and waste to a holding tank 28, the compressed-air being admitted for a predetermined time which is adjustable by altering the setting of a bleed valve 104 which controls the length of time the relay valve 100 remains operative after actuation. To effect these operations in the desired sequence, a manually-operated lever 22, which may be positioned on the toilet in either of the two positions shown, is mechanically linked to the slide valve, as indicated at 40, and is also coupled to a pull rod 50 having cam surfaces 56 58. The former of these cooperates with a follower 62 on an actuating arm of a switch 64 connected in series with the solenoid valve 66, whereby water is admitted to the bowl during downward movement of the handle of the lever 22 for a period determined by the time taken to fully depress and release the handle. The cam surface 58, on the other hand, merely pushes aside a spring-loaded pivoted plate carrying a follower 82, during downward movement of the handle, but on return movement of the lever 22 it. cooperates with the follower 82 to raise and lower a lever 80, which acts on the plunger 86 of a valve 88 to cause a puff of air from a compressed-air reservoir 92 into a control reservoir 102, charging the latter to a pressure sufficient to actuate the control piston of relay valve 100. The pressure in the control reservoir 102 subsequently reduces at a rate determined by the setting of the bleed valve 104, which thus determines the operating time of the relay valve and hence the duration of the supply of compressed air via the relay valve 100 to the chamber formed by the interior of base 16, which is now airtight since slide valve 20 was re-closed on return of the lever 22.
