Abstract

1349058 Bonded fibre fabric IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 April 1971 [19 May 1970] 24211/70 Heading D1R [Also in Division C3] A mixture of at least one organic monomer containing an ethylenically unsaturated group and an organic compound containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups is applied to a fibrous web by spraying or impregnation then photopolymerised at discrete locations over the web to bond the web. The web may be formed by carding or laying in a random or regular manner staple or continuous filaments of polyester, polyolefin polyacrylic, nylon or natural material, or a mixture thereof. It may then be needled. Suitable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are acrylamide, acrylonitrile, styrene, alkyl acylates, alkyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl byrrolidone, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, 2 hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2 hydroxyethyl acrylate, N-methylol acrylamide and vinyl pyridine. Suitable polyunsaturated compounds are divinylbenzene, N, N'-methylenebis-acrylamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylene diacrylate and unsaturated polymers such as poly (ethylene fumarate). A list of organic and inorganic photoinitiators is given, including the dyes methylene blue and riboflavin chloroform or water/ethylene glycol are used as solvent. Excess solution is squeezed off. The u.v. or visible light may be shone through a perforated screen onto a stationary or moving web, or the web scanned by moving light source, using a rotating mirror or cathode ray tube or a pattern produced by a diffraction grating or halogram. Unreacted monomer is removed by washing or solvent extraction.
