Abstract
1347943 Production of fibre-grade terephthalic acid MARUZEN OIL CO Ltd 12 Jan 1972 1538/72 Heading C2C Terephthalic acid is prepared by oxidizing a dialkyl benzene in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen containing gas in the presence of a C 1-8 carboxylic acid and an oxidation catalyst in a reaction vessel, the dialkyl benzene being fed to the vessel through at least three vertically spaced inlets within the vessel while the reaction mixture is stirred. The reaction mixture is preferably stirred at a stirring driving power of at least 9 horse power per 1000 gallons of reaction mixture, preferably by means of a multi-stage type stirrer, the ratio of the length of the stirring blades to the diameter of the reaction vessel being from 0À4 : 1 to 0À6 : 1, and the blades being vertically separated by an interval from 1 to 1À5 times the length of the blades.
