Abstract

1344627 Supply systems for position controllers INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 23 July 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 42368/70 Heading H2H A system for controlling the position of the movable element of an actuator 21 comprises an inductive energy store 25 power sources 18, 19 for supplying opposed currents to the actuator and additive currents to the energy store, transistor switches 10, 11 effective in a first condition to cause the sources to supply equal currents to the actuator and in a second condition to supply a nett current to the actuator and a circuit 12 for switching the transistors from the first to the second condition to enable the energy store to deliver energy to the actuator. The actuator may comprise a recording head which is to be positioned adjacent a track on a magnetic disc. The actuator is maintained in a fixed position by the circuit 12 which switches on the transistors 10, 11 so that equal and opposite currents flow through the actuator. To move the actuator in one direction, the circuit 12 switches off one transistor, for example the transistor 11, by applying a signal on lead 23, thereby inducing a current in coil 16 which is added to the current provided by the source 19 to accelerate the actuator. The movement of the actuator however generates a back e.m.f. which produces a current in opposition to the accelerating current. When the actuator has moved approximately half its required distance, the transistors 10 and 11 are switched off and on respectively by the circuit 12 so that the back e.m.f. due to the movement of the actuator now reinforces the decelerating voltage supplied by the source 18 and the voltage induced in the coil 17, thus bringing the actuator to rest. The transistors may be replaced by thermionic valves.
