Abstract

1334704 Joining webs JAMES HALLEY & SONS Ltd 27 May 1971 [18 June 1970] 29529/70 Heading B8R A web joining device comprises a reel-stand including shafts 13, 14 for adjustably supporting first and second reels 50, 51 of web material; belts 41 operable to rotate the second reel 50 i.e. the replacement reel, at a speed corresponding to the speed of the running web 52 from the working reel 51; a roller 32 operable to urge the web 52 against the adhesively prepared web on the reel 50; a cutter 34; and control means for operating the roller 32 and cutter 34 in sequence, the control means including, for each shaft 13 and 14, a magnetized element 21 mounted on a disc 20 for rotation with the shaft, and first and second magnetically actuated proximity switches 26, 27 mounted at respective spaced stations adjacent the path of movement of the element 21. In operation, the leading end of the replacement web is cut to shape and is prepared with an adhesive and this zone of the periphery of the replacement reel is aligned with the magnetized element 21. When the running web is almost exhausted the replacement reel is brought up to a matching speed, and a splicing switch is actuated manually to activate a circuit which includes the proximity switches 26, 27. The element 21 actuates switch 26 when its angular position coincides therewith to cause roller 32 to press the web 52 on to the adhesive-carrying zone of the reel 50 to splice the two webs, the element 21 next activating the switch 27 to operate the cutter 34 to sever the old web. Thus the sequential operation of the roller 32 and cutter 34 is accurately controlled relative to the angular movement of the adhesive-carrying zone of the replacement reel.
