Abstract
1332202 Driving passenger conveyers A P PEDRICK 5 March 1971 6387/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division H2] An electric generator 14 is driven by means 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 actuated whenever a ramp 2 projecting from a road surface is engaged by a wheel W of a passing vehicle. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the mechanical means 8-13 are replaced by an hydraulic drive system and Fig. 3 (not shown) depicts an alternative mechanical arrangement. The means 8-13 include a flywheel 12 so that successive impacts on the ramp increase the energy stored in the rotating flywheel, this stored energy being converted into electricity by the generator. There are two main aspects to the envisaged application of the invention. Firstly, traffic control: the very presence of the ramp in the road can cause vehicles to slow down, e.g. at dangerous locations such as hills or intersections, and the electrical output can be used to rotate a turntable which regulates traffic flow e.g. on a roundabout. Secondly, pedestrian assistance: the ramps may be situated near to road crossing bridge or subway and the electric output can drive a conveyer system, Fig. 5 (not shown) to carry pedestrians over such a crossing. The invention is stated to be applicable to railways or aircraft runways as well as motor roads.
